High significant wave heights for coastal portions of mainland Alaska, Sun-Mon, Jan 13-Jan 14. Detailed Summary: A storm over the Southeast will move off the Mid-Atlantic by Sunday evening. The system will produce heavy snow over parts of the Mid-Atlantic on Sunday morning. There is some uncertainty with the ECMWF going a little farther south than the GFS. Deep low over the Aleutians will move Northwestward into the Bering Sea while weakening. A long fetch over the Pacific will steer a plume of moisture into parts of the Alaska Coast from Sunday into Wednesday. The system will produce heavy precipitation near the Kodiak Island with rain at lower elevations and snow at higher elevations. The storm will also produce high wind over the Aleutians and Wade Hampton/Nome from Sunday into Wednesday due to the tight pressure gradient associated with the storm. A long with the high wind, significant waves will be associated with the storm. The waves will be over 20 feet. Another storm over the Eastern Pacific will move towards the West Coast on Sunday into Monday then retreat to the Northwest over the Eastern Pacific on Wednesday into Thursday. The pressure gradient associated with the low will produce high wind over the coast of Northern/Central California on Sunday and again on Tuesday into Wednesday. A plume of moisture over the Eastern Pacific will move into California on Tuesday into Thursday. The storm will produce heavy rain and higher elevation heavy snow over California on Sunday into Thursday. Ziegenfelder
