US Day 3-7 Hazards Outlook NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 435 PM EDT Wed Mar 20 2019 Valid Saturday March 23 2019 - Wednesday March 27 2019 Hazards: - Heavy precipitation across portions of California, the Central Great Basin, and the Pacific Northwest, Mon-Wed, Mar 25-Mar 27. - Heavy rain across portions of the Lower Mississippi Valley and the Southern Plains, Sat-Sun, Mar 23-Mar 24. - Heavy rain across portions of the Middle/Lower Mississippi Valley, the Central/Southern Appalachians, the Tennessee Valley, the Mid-Atlantic, the Southeast, and the Ohio Valley, Mon-Tue, Mar 25-Mar 26. - Heavy snow across portions of the Mid-Atlantic and the Central Appalachians, Tue-Wed, Mar 26-Mar 27. - Heavy snow across portions of the Northeast and the Great Lakes, Sat, Mar 23. - Severe weather across portions of the Southern Plains, Sun, Mar 24. - Flooding possible across portions of the Northern/Central Plains, the Upper/Middle Mississippi Valley, and the Great Lakes. - Flooding occurring or imminent across portions of the Northern/Central Plains, the Mississippi Valley, the Tennessee Valley, the Great Lakes, and the Ohio Valley. - Heavy precipitation across portions of mainland Alaska, Mon, Mar 25. - Heavy precipitation across portions of the Alaska Panhandle and mainland Alaska, Sat-Sun, Mar 23-Mar 24. - High winds across portions of mainland Alaska and the Aleutians, Mon, Mar 25. Detailed Summary: Recent heavy rain and snow melt is contributing to flooding over parts of the Northern Plains into the Upper Mississippi Valley and the Upper Great Lakes through Monday. In addition, earlier snow melt and rain moving southward from the Upper Mississippi Valley into portions of the Middle and Lower Mississippi Valley producing flooding near the river and tributaries through Monday. In the meantime, upper-level energy just off the California Coast will be reinforced by additional upper-level energy over the Central Plains on Monday, before moving eastward to the off the Southeast Coast by Wednesday. Showers and thunderstorms will develop ahead of a dryline over parts of the Southern Plains on Sunday were some of the thunderstorms will be severe. The associated surface low will move to the Tennessee Valley by Monday and off the Mid-Atlantic Coast by Wednesday. The system will produce heavy rain over parts of the Southern Plains into the Lower Mississippi Valley on Saturday into Sunday. The heavy rain will move into parts of the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys on Monday into Tuesday. As the storm moves off the coast on Tuesday into Wednesday, there is a chance of heavy snow developing over parts of the Central Appalachians. Additionally, a storm moving out of Northern New England on Saturday will produce an area of heavy snow over parts of the Northeast on Saturday. On Monday, a storm over the Eastern Pacific will begin to move onshore over California and try to move eastward into California by Wednesday. An associated plume of moisture will stream into Northern/Central California on Monday with a second plume moving into the coast on Wednesday. The storm and moisture will aid in producing heavy precipitation with lower elevation rain and higher elevation snow on Monday into Wednesday. In Alaska, deep low pressure moving into the Gulf of Alaska on Saturday and an associated plume of moisture will stream into coastal regions of of the Alaska mainland from Kenai Peninsula to near Yakutat that will produce heavy precipitation on Saturday into Sunday. Deep low pressure over the Bering Sea will move northward into the Bering Strait by Tuesday. The system will produce high wind over the Aleutians and the West Coast of the Alaska mainland on Monday.
