Detailed Summary: Another cold and deep upper low over the northwestern U.S. is forecast to move off the northern Rockies and lift into south-central Canada during the weekend. Global models continue to indicate the possibility of residual snow over the higher elevations of Montana and northwestern Wyoming Saturday morning. Temperatures will be much colder than normal from the Great Basin to the central and northern Rockies through the weekend, where morning low temperatures are forecast to dip below freezing at some locations. As the upper-level low lifts into Canada during the weekend, heavy rain will likely spread from the central Plains northeastward across the upper Midwest into the Great Lakes ahead of a warm front. Farther west, model guidance is indicating that a second piece of energy in the wake of the departing upper low will amplify over the central Rockies as the amplifying upper low interacts with a cold front during the weekend. Snow is a possibility over the higher elevations of the Great Basin on Saturday, shifting eastward into the central Rockies on Sunday when a low pressure system is forecast to intensify over the central High Plains. There is the possibility of heavy rain ahead of this low over portions of the southern Plains early next week. It appears that the heavy rain threat over the Plains will decrease by the middle of next week as the main low pressure system lifts into the Great Lakes and southeastern Canada while a high pressure ridge begins to build into the Southeast. Meanwhile, summer heat from the Deep South is expected to spread northeastward into the Mid-Atlantic by early next week. Heat indices are forecast to reach 110 degrees across the Rio Grande Valley of southern Texas each day. As the hot and humid air spreads northeastward, afternoon heat indices are expected to reach 105 degrees from portions of the Florida Panhandle to along the coastal plains of the Southeast through the middle of next week. No hazardous weather is anticipated for Alaska through the medium-range period. Kong
