Detailed Summary: A broad upper level trough will develop over the East Coast this weekend as a surface boundary dives southeastward across the region. This will lead to heavy rain across much of the Carolina coastline as well as southeast Virginia. A series of short waves will propagate through the northern half of the country bringing heavy rain to the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest between next Monday and Wednesday. Flooding is likely across portions of South Dakota and southern Minnesota as a result of the heavy rain. Meanwhile, substantial ridging over the central U.S. will cause heat indices to reach the 105 degree range over parts of Arkansas and northern/central Louisiana. Significant ridging over Alaska will continue from the weekend through next Wednesday will lead to Much Above Normal Temperatures and an Enhanced Wildfire Risk over coastal and interior areas. The Above Normal Temperatures and Wildfire risk will only be in place through the weekend for the Alaskan Peninsula. Over Hawaii, we are monitoring the progress of Hurricane Barbara, which is currently intensifying rapidly as a major hurricane well to the southwest of Mexico. Global models indicate that Barbara will be moving across the vicinity of Hawaii during the Monday to Tuesday time frame. The storm should weaken as it approaches Hawaii early next week. However, with above normal sea-surface temperatures around Hawaii, the future track and intensity of Barbara will need to be watched closely. Kebede
