Detailed Summary: The medium range period will feature upper-level ridging across the west and troughing across the east. Two potent cold fronts are forecast to swing through the central and eastern United States, bringing widespread temperatures well below average between Thursday and Tuesday. Low temperatures below freezing could reach as far south as central Mississippi on Saturday, with lows in the single digits possible across the Northern Plains on Monday. The only precipitation hazard on today's map is a heavy snow area across the Northeast. A cold front is forecast to push across the region on Thursday, with light rain/snow possible. As the front exits the New England coast on Friday, a low pressure system may develop and strengthen, leading to a swath of light-to-moderate snow. The greatest chance for accumulating snow greater than 4 inches currently stretches from northern Pennsylvania to Maine, but uncertainty still remains on exact amounts and location. Lake effect snow is a possibility as the system exits on Friday evening and again on Sunday/Monday after a second cold front crosses the Great Lakes. Across Alaska, above average temperatures and a few rounds of rain and snow are possible across southern portions of the state during the medium range period. However, no weather hazards are currently expected. Snell
