Detailed Summary: The medium range period (Thursday, Dec. 12 to Monday, Dec. 16) will feature precipitation hazards across both the eastern and western United States. Meanwhile, one last day of well below normal temperatures will be found across the Upper Midwest and Upper Great Lakes. Temperatures are forecast to be around 10 to 20 degrees below normal on Thursday, but will recover rapidly by the weekend as a warm front lifts northward. Heavy rain is expected to impact nearly the entire East Coast, from the eastern Gulf Coast to southern New England, as a potent low pressure system moves north on Friday and Saturday. A widespread area of 1 to 2 inches of rain is likely, with freezing rain possible at the onset across the higher elevations and areas just to the east of the Appalachians. Further north, heavy snow and a wintry mix is more likely across the Interior Northeast and northern Maine on Saturday and Sunday, but even these areas could switch over to plain rain. By Monday, another round of heavy rain is possible across the Southeast and Lower Mississippi Valley, with light snow possible to the north. Across the western U.S., heavy precipitation (mountain snow and coastal/valley rain) will likely impact the Pacific Northwest on Thursday and Friday. Upwards of 2 inches of total precipitation will be possible here. As the moisture works inland, heavy snow (greater than 8 inches) could fall across portions of the Northern Rockies. Higher elevations of Colorado could see snow linger into early next week. No hazards are currently expected across Alaska during these dates. Snell
