Detailed Summary: The medium range period (Thursday, November 5th - Monday, November 9th) will feature an active pattern over Alaska and the western U.S.. High pressure will settle over much of the eastern third of the country during the medium range period, while a new system emerges from the Rockies. This system is expected to produce heavy snow over parts of central and eastern Montana on Saturday before moving into the Plains and Mississippi Valley. Heavy rain will be a threat across the Southern/Central Plains through to the Upper Midwest on Monday as the low pressure system strengthens and enhances rainfall along its cold front. Temperatures will quickly drop on the backside of this system as cold air filters into the western U.S. beneath an area of high pressure. High temperatures are expected to be down to 26 degrees below average for parts of Nevada and western Utah, as well as the Northern/Central Plains on Monday. This may lead to widespread high temperature records being broken. Meanwhile, a late season plume of tropical moisture will make its way into South Florida this weekend which will lead to the threat of heavy rain for that area from Saturday through Monday. Anomalously warm low temperatures may lead to records being broken across parts of the northwest and southwest on Thursday, as well as the Central Plains and Upper Midwest on Saturday and Sunday. In Alaska, a pair of systems will produce scattered areas of rainfall and heavy precipitation between Thursday and Monday. On Thursday an emerging Bering Sea low pressure system will generate enough rain and wind to cause coastal flooding. Another low pressure system will emerge over the Gulf of Alaska on the 8th. This system is likely to be the cause of heavy precipitation across the southeastern mainland and northern panhandle on the 8th. The heavy precipitation is likely to recede into the rest of the panhandle on Monday. Above average temperatures across the northern mainland as well as below average temps over the southeastern part of the state are also expected during the medium range period despite not being particularly hazardous.
