Detailed Summary: A shortwave will bring heavy snow to the West, and eventually heavy rain and snow to the East during the Medium Range period (Friday, Jan. 22 - Tuesday, Jan. 26). A surface low pressure system will enter the West through northern California on Friday. This system will produce heavy snow over parts of the Central/Southern Rockies from Friday through Monday, but will let up over parts of the Utah Rockies on Sunday. Another heavy snow threat will emerge over the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes on Saturday and will continue into Sunday as the Rockies low pressure spills out over the Central/Southern Plains. This system will drop into the Southern Plains and track across the Deep South this weekend. There's a chance for heavy rain over a swath extending from the ArkLaTex region to the Mid-Atlantic between Sunday and Monday of next week. Enough cold air may seep into the Central Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic to produce some heavy precipitation on Monday, but the chances of this are relatively low at the moment. Back in the West, another shortwave will swing into the coast on Sunday. This system will carry the potential for heavy snow to the Cascades and Olympics. As the upper-level feature slips southward on Monday, it will generate an area of heavy snow over the Sierra and Central/Southern Rockies. Temperatures will remain seasonal across the CONUS during the medium range period. In Alaska, a deep area of surface low pressure will enter the Bering Sea on Sunday. This low pressure system may produce strong winds along the Aleutian and western mainland coast through Monday. Kebede
