Detailed Summary: Much of the CONUS will experience an active weather pattern during the medium range period (Monday, January 25 to Friday, January 29). A shortwave will generate heavy precipitation over parts of the Mid-west on Monday. The associated surface low will track across the Tennessee/Ohio Valleys and spread heavy rain across that area on Monday. Heavy precipitation may also develop over the Central Appalachians and into eastern Pennsylvania that day. Another shortwave spinning through the Southwest/Great Basin will produce heavy snow over the southern Sierra, eastern Nevada, southeast Utah on Monday, and central Arizona on Monday and Tuesday. Effects from a deep upper-level low will impact northern/central California between Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. This system is forecast to produce heavy rain along the northern/central California coast while dumping heavy snow from southeastern Oregon into the Sierra during this period. Parts of coastal California may receive multiple inches of rain over the two day period, which may cause serious flooding due to the ongoing drought and burn scar areas present. The Sierra may accumulate multiple feet of snow from this system. Temperatures will be above normal as a warm front lifts through the Lower/Middle Mississippi Valley and Tennessee Valley on Monday. Meanwhile, in Alaska, a deep area of low pressure will generate high winds across the western tip of the Aleutians between Tuesday and Wednesday. Winds will generally be higher than normal across the Aleutians during this period. Kebede
