US Day 3-7 Hazards Outlook NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 406 PM EST Mon Jan 10 2022 Valid Thursday January 13 2022 - Monday January 17 2022 Hazards: - Heavy snow across portions of the Upper/Middle Mississippi Valley, and the Great Lakes, Fri, Jan 14. - Flooding occurring or imminent across portions of the Lower Mississippi Valley and the Pacific Northwest. - High winds across portions of the Plains, the Northeast, the Central Appalachians, the Mid-Atlantic, the Great Lakes, and the Ohio Valley, Fri, Jan 14. - Much below normal temperatures across portions of the Mid-Atlantic, the Northeast, and the Great Lakes, Sat, Jan 15. - Heavy precipitation across portions of mainland Alaska, Thu, Jan 13. - Heavy precipitation across portions of the Alaska Panhandle and mainland Alaska, Fri, Jan 14 and Sun, Jan 16. - High winds across portions of mainland Alaska and the Aleutians, Thu, Jan 13. - High winds across portions of the Alaska Panhandle, Fri through Sun, Jan 14, 15, and 16. Detailed Summary: High pressure over the Rockies on Thursday combined with low pressure moving over the Plains on Friday will produce a strong pressure gradient over the Central High Plains and adjacent areas on Thursday into Friday. The associated pressure gradient will create an area of High Winds over the region on Friday, with the wind beginning to increase on Thursday. Furthermore, as the area of low pressure moves southeastward to the Middle Mississippi Valley by Saturday, Heavy Snow will develop over parts of the Upper/Middle Mississippi Valley and the Upper Great Lakes on Friday. Similarly, low pressure off the Mid-Atlantic Coast and high pressure near James Bay in Canada will produce a strong pressure gradient over parts of the Northeast and along the Northeast Coast for Friday. Therefore, an area of High Winds is depicted on the Hazards Chart over parts of the Northeast into the northern Mid-Atlantic on Friday. In addition, the area of high pressure over parts of Eastern Canada and the low off the Northeast/Canadian Maritimes Coast will pull cold air southward over the Northeast on Saturday. As a result, low temperatures will be in the single digits below zero to ten below zero temperatures over northern Maine on Saturday morning. Therefore, an area of Much Below Normal Temperatures is on the Hazards Chart on Saturday. Over Alaska, an area of deep low pressure south of the Aleutians will have a strong pressure gradient associated with the low, producing an area of High Winds over the Alaska Peninsula by Thursday. Moisture associated with the low will create an area of Heavy Precipitation over parts of the Kenai Peninsula, Afognak and Kodiak Islands, and the land on the Alaska Peninsula across from Kenai Peninsula and Afognak and Kodiak Islands on Thursday. On Thursday, another area of low pressure over the North Pacific will move into the Gulf of Alaska by Friday. The associated pressure gradient will produce an area of High Winds over the Alaskan Panhandle on Friday and Saturday. The system will also stream moisture into the panhandle, creating an area of Heavy Precipitation over the region on Friday. Furthermore, a third area of low pressure over the North Pacific will move into the Gulf of Alaska by Sunday. Again, the low will stream moisture into the Alaskan Panhandle, producing another area of Heavy Precipitation across the panhandle on Sunday. Moreover, the pressure gradient associated with the low will also create an area of High Winds over the panhandle on Sunday. Ziegenfelder
