US Day 3-7 Hazards Outlook NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 249 PM EST Tue Jan 11 2022 Valid Friday January 14 2022 - Tuesday January 18 2022 Hazards: - Heavy snow across portions of the Northern/Central Plains, and the Upper/Middle Mississippi Valley, Fri, Jan 14. - Flooding occurring or imminent across portions of the Lower Mississippi Valley and the Pacific Northwest. - Flooding likely across portions of the Pacific Northwest. - High winds across portions of the Great Plains, Fri, Jan 14. - Much below normal temperatures across portions of the Mid-Atlantic, the Northeast, and the Great Lakes, Sat, Jan 15. - Heavy precipitation across portions of the Alaska Panhandle, Fri, Jan 14. - High winds across portions of the Alaska Panhandle, Fri, Jan 14. Detailed Summary: An upper low, parked around Hudson Bay, Canada, will eject a series of shortwaves which will lead to hazardous weather for parts of the central and eastern parts of the CONUS through the medium range (Friday, January 14th - Tuesday, January 18th). Temperatures will begin to drop drastically across the Northeast on Friday as a cold front sweeps through the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast Thursday night. High temperatures will be in teens 20s and low 30s across the Northeast on Friday before dropping even further Friday night into Saturday. Friday night lows will be dangerously low, in the negative single digits with wind chills likely much lower than that. Highs on Saturday won't escape the teens in the Northeast, which will constitute a 20-30 degree departure from normal. Meanwhile, another shortwave trough will emerge from the Northern Rockies and produce a significant winter storm over the Northern Plains and Upper/Middle Mississippi Valley on Friday. High winds are likely to impact much of the Front Range into parts of southeastern Colorado/Oklahoma panhandle on Friday as the pressure gradient tightens on the backside of the developing winter storm. Heavy snowfall is likely to the north of the low over parts of far southeastern North Dakota and eastern South Dakota, central and southern Minnesota, much of Iowa, and western Illinois Friday into Saturday morning. The shortwave is then forecast to drop down into the Southeast and redevelop the associated low into a coastal system. Light rain showers are likely for much of the Deep South on Friday and Saturday as the surface wave dips into the region. The latest model trends have this southeastern low tracking closer to the coast as it departs northward from the Southeast coast on Sunday. This track could mean potentially hazardous weather for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Monday, but we're holding off on any hazard areas at this time until there's a more consistent model signal. In Alaska, a deep area of low pressure moving through the Gulf will generate plenty of moisture and winds over parts of the panhandle on Friday. Heavy precipitation is expected for much of the panhandle as high winds are only likely over parts of the southern portion of the panhandle--in and around southern Prince Wales Island. Kebede
