US Day 3-7 Hazards Outlook NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 250 PM EST Thu Jan 20 2022 Valid Sunday January 23 2022 - Thursday January 27 2022 Hazards: - Much below normal temperatures across portions of the Southern Plains and the Southwest, Sun-Mon, Jan 23-Jan 24. - Much below normal temperatures across portions of the Northern/Central Plains, the Upper/Middle Mississippi Valley, and the Great Lakes, Sun, Jan 23 and Tue-Wed, Jan 25-Jan 26. - Heavy precipitation across portions of the Alaska Panhandle and mainland Alaska, Sun-Mon, Jan 23-Jan 24. - High winds across portions of the Alaska Panhandle and mainland Alaska, Mon, Jan 24. Detailed Summary: The medium range period (Sunday, January 23rd to Thursday, January 27th) will be relatively quiet across the lower 48 while Alaska's mainland Gulf Coast experiences an active period. The overall pattern will persist through the period as an upper-level ridge very slowly makes its way into the West Coast, and a series of short waves round an upper trough, centered around the Northwestern Passages of Canada, as they move through the Midwest and Northeast. Very cold air will arrive across the Deep South and East Coast behind a polar front associated with this Friday/Saturday's Mid-Atlantic/Southeast winter storm. High temperatures on Sunday will be between 15-25 degrees below normal for many of the aforementioned regions. High pressure will descend into the Northern Plains from Canada on Tuesday launching a cold front through the Central U.S.. This will allow for another shot of arctic air to invade the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest on Tuesday and Wednesday. High temperatures will be 20-30 degrees below average for many areas during this period. Much of the Northern and Central Plains will be warm through Monday before the arrival of the next cold front on Tuesday. The West remains seasonably warm under the upper-ridge. A piece of shortwave energy will break off from the mean flow across the CONUS, drop into the Southwest and develop into a cutoff low this weekend. This low may go on to produce heavy rainfall across the Gulf coast early next week, but too much uncertainty still exists as to whether the strongest rainfall will make it ashore. ...Alaska... The active pattern continues along the mainland Gulf Coast of Alaska before quieting down a bit by next Tuesday. A low pressure system will spread heavy precipitation and high winds across the southern mainland coast of Alaska between Sunday and Monday before weakening and stalling out along the mainland/panhandle coasts. Much of the mainland will be seasonably warm through Tuesday before a cold front sweeps across the region and moderates temperatures. Kebede
