Mesoscale Precipitation Discussion 0608
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
345 PM EDT Tue Aug 07 2018
Areas affected...Central Ohio Valley
Concerning...Heavy rainfall...Flash flooding possible
Valid 071944Z - 080144Z
Summary...A developing line of heavy thunderstorms will continue
to progress east over the central Ohio Valley through the rest of
the afternoon making for a flash flood threat.
Discussion...Latest radar/satellite trends indicate increasing
thunderstorm coverage across southeast Indiana and far northern
Kentucky in deep southwest flow ahead of a trough axis over the
east-central Great Plains. Dewpoints are in the low 70s with 2
inch precipitable water values advecting across the area (a 1.5
standardized anomaly over normal). 1.5 inches of rain have been
estimated from nearby WSR-88Ds in the past hour. There is
potential for 2 inch per hour rain rates through the afternoon
with training cells allowing heavy rain to last more than an hour
in some locations.
Flash flood guidance lowers ahead of the current activity over
southern portions of Cincinnati and east (1.5-2in/hr) which is
taking on an orientation parallel to storm motion, raising the
spectre of training and flash flooding.
