Firmly in the midsummer trades, the only fly in the ointment for
Hawai'i during the next week will be an approaching tropical wave
this weekend. The European Centre ensemble mean is closest to the
forecast coordinated between the National Hurricane Center and the
National Weather Center on the routine hotline call midday
yesterday. The deep-layer moisture field associated with the
wave--displaced to the north of the surface trough with
time--could fuel several inches of rainfall along the island chain
if it tracks directly across the state. It is still too far in the
future to make that call.
