Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 659 AM EST Sat Jan 03 2015 Valid 00Z Sun Jan 04 2015 - 00Z Sun Jan 11 2015 Latest model and ensemble guidance shows no significant discrepancies during the forecast period. A strong and sharp upper trough, with some 500mb heights reaching at least 4-5 standard deviations below normal, is currently crossing the islands and pushing along a strong cold front accompanied by bands of locally enhanced rainfall. Strong low level winds are turning from southwesterly to northwesterly with passage of the front. As the system lifts to the northeast expect rapid drying with northwesterly winds persisting into Sun, turning more from the north/northeast by Mon. A relatively weak/dry cold front will reach the state on Tue with trailing high pressure supporting moderate trades during the middle part of the week. During the latter part of the week into the weekend the combination of the high reaching the eastern Pacific along with an upstream front that is likely to approach but not reach the area should lead to lighter trades. A relative lack of deep moisture should keep any shower activity on the light side though moisture may increase a little by next Sat. Rausch
