Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 835 AM EDT Wed Aug 17 2016 Valid 00Z Thu Aug 18 2016 - 00Z Thu Aug 25 2016 In the short term, the pattern remains quite stable with a weak low passing south of the islands. During this period, forecast precipitable water values remain between 1.25 and 1.5 inches with values on the higher end starting late Thursday into Friday. A general increase of those values occurs by Monday that continues thru Thursday to values of 1.75 inches or greater. This occurs as both the GFS/ECMWF show an amplification of an upper trough that moves northwest of the islands to south of 30N by the end of the forecast. This development looks like it will help create an inverted surface trough west of the islands that could break up the standard trade flow regime and increase the likelihood of heavier precipitation.
