Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 750 AM EDT Mon Oct 10 2016 Valid 00Z Tue Oct 11 2016 - 00Z Tue Oct 18 2016 The models continue to advertise an expanding deep layer mean ridge initially northwest of the islands that builds norther of the islands as the week progresses, then northeast of the islands early next week. As this occurs, the primary moisture channel will be confined south of the islands, with forecast precipitable water values below normal through the rest of the week. At the surface, a gradual increase in the anticyclone strength will enhance the pressure gradient across the region which favors an increase in the trade winds. Multiple models show periods of sustained low-level winds of 20 knots with locally higher gusts. Widely scattered showers should focus in windward areas and regions of upslope flow. Coverage should be somewhat limited by the lower end moisture content available. The gfs and ecmwf hint an approaching tropical wave early next week, which would act to advect more moisture into the islands. Petersen
