Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 818 AM EDT Thu May 17 2018 Valid 00Z Fri May 18 2018 - 00Z Fri May 25 2018 A surface trough over the islands on Thursday will dissipate as an upper ridge and sfc high pressure take over. Trades will be relatively breezy through the weekend into next week as a 1026mb high pressure center meanders around 32N. By late Monday into Tuesday, a trough will dig along 160W north of the islands as an upper high near the Dateline builds eastward. The ensembles differ in handling this trough with the GFS/GEFS members much farther southwestward than the ECMWF/Canadian and their ensembles. Though the trend has been toward a slower trough and stronger upstream upper ridge, prefer to side with the 00Z ECMWF for now in its middle ground solution as the 00Z GFS and especially the 06Z GFS seemed too aggressive (too far southwest). This would generally keep precipitable water values near to below average next week rather than allow deep tropical moisture to flow northward from the ITCZ. Fracasso
