Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 830 AM EDT Fri Aug 17 2018 Valid 00Z Sat Aug 18 2018 - 00Z Sat Aug 25 2018 Typical trade wind conditions are expected to persist across Hawaii through the weekend as a high pressure system over the Northeast Pacific remains in firm control. Meanwhile, Hurricane Lane in the eastern tropical Atlantic is forecast to intensify into a major hurricane and move into the CPHC area of responsibility this weekend. The strong high pressure system to the north should keep the hurricane on a west-northwesterly track through the weekend. Model consensus continues to support a track about two hundred miles to the south of the Big Island by next Wednesday. The GFS remains to be the northern outlier showing a tendency to turn more to the northwest closer to the western island chain by the end of next week. The ECMWF has been keeping Lane farther south while the UKMET is farthest to the south. All models support a general weakening trend as it tracks Lane to the south of the islands. More frequent showers with increasing northeasterly winds along with the possibility of a few squalls are possible from middle to late next week.
