Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 720 AM EST Tue Jan 15 2019 Valid 00Z Wed Jan 16 2019 - 00Z Wed Jan 23 2019 The upper-level ridge and surface high pressures positioned to the west/southwest of the Hawai'ian Islands has begun to weaken. Tradewinds will continue to relax today and Wednesday, along with light showery activity, before an upper-level trough and surface cold front approaches the state to the northwest Thursday and Friday. Brief periods of enhanced rainfall will likely accompany the front as is sweeps across the state, reaching the Big Island by this weekend. Additionally, wind speeds and direction will increase and become more westerly with the frontal passage; but will return to northerly/easterly as surface high pressure tracks north of the Islands, supporting a return to primarily windward-focused showers especially over the Big Island.
