Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 721 AM EST Tue Feb 19 2019 Valid 00Z Wed Feb 20 2019 - 00Z Wed Feb 27 2019 An upper-level low responsible for an ongoing heavy rainfall event across the eastern Hawaiian Islands is forecast by all guidance to quickly eject northeastward away from Hawaii on Wed. This will bring a decrease in moisture and a reduction in the overall coverage of rainfall. The ECMWF and GFS do suggest a lingering surface boundary persisting near the Big Island in the wake of the upper low. Higher PWs (1.50-2.0 inches) focusing along this boundary should continue to provide some enhanced coverage of showers and locally heavy rains across the Big Island through Sat before drier air overspreads the entire state as northwesterly flow develops aloft in response to a broad trough developing east of Hawaii through early next week. While gusty south winds will initially be possible Tue night these should quickly decrease as the upper low and an associated developing surface low pull away. An area of relatively weak pressure gradient left behind in the wake of the system will result in generally light north to northeast winds across the state through late this week, gradually increasing into the 10-15 kt range through the weekend and early next week as surface high pressure builds north of the state.
