Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 818 AM EDT Wed Mar 13 2019 Valid 00Z Thu Mar 14 2019 - 00Z Thu Mar 21 2019 Clouds and light showers on the north side of the islands this morning is a result a mid-level weakness passing overhead. Surface high pressure positioned north of the state will drift eastward as a trough approaches and passes. A surface cold front is expected to sweep through the islands Saturday morning and afternoon and continue moving eastward Sunday and beyond. With the frontal passage the trade winds will change from and easterly 10-20 kt to more northwest/northerly 20-25 kt. High pressure will return in its wake by Monday which bring a return to more typical conditions and 10-20 kt trades. Shower activity will generally be sparse given the drier air mass prior to the frontal passage. Only a slight increase in shower activity is anticipated with the arrival of the front. By Monday, a surface high should once again rebuild just north of Hawaii with upper ridging west of Hawaii expanding east across the state. Subsidence associated with the ridge will dry the air mass further, with PWs dropping well below 1 inch by early next week. Campbell
