Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 722 AM EST Tue Dec 23 2014 Valid 00Z Wed Dec 24 2014 - 00Z Wed Dec 31 2014 ...Kona Storm... A Kona low is progged to make a loop about the Hawai'ian islands tonight through Thursday, before being kicked to the northeast as another impulse drops down from the main band of westerlies this weekend. For now it appears that the second impulse will forge another eddy northeast of the state, though the current system was originally forecast to close off away from Hawai'i as well. Time will tell. A third(!) vortex may drop into the region by the middle of next week. If all three eddies were to center on the state, rainfall totals would be astronomical. The current Kona low is capable of producing several inches of rainfall throughout the island chain, with gusty shifting winds. Any westward shift in the looping of the storm would result in significantly higher rainfall amounts. The rainfall potential over the next weeks very much depends on the track of any subsequent vortices. Cisco
