Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 817 AM EDT Mon Aug 10 2015 Valid 00Z Tue Aug 11 2015 - 00Z Tue Aug 18 2015 ...Heavy rain possible later this week as Hurricane Hilda approaches the islands in weakened form... *** Please consult the CPHC for the latest forecast information on Hilda *** Quiet pattern in the short term will give way to increased rain chances later this week as current Hurricane Hilda continues to approach the islands. The latest CPHC track takes the system over the southern part of the Big Island mostly in between the 00Z GFS and ECMWF. Though the ensembles still diverge to the north and south around the islands later this week, all indicate a rise in PW values to between 1.50-3.00" inches, clustered around 2-2.25" (again in between the 00Z GFS and ECMWF). Model/ensemble QPF on the eastern side of the islands (and in lower elevations) range from about 1-12" with the best clustering between about 3-4" and again around 5-7". A track westward along 20N would likely yield higher rather than lower rainfall amounts, with >12" in the higher elevations quite possible. The system (in remnant form) should continue to pull away from the islands Sunday into Monday but PW values may remain above average despite upper ridging forecast to build into the region. Fracasso
