Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 702 AM EST Sun Jan 24 2016 Valid 00Z Mon Jan 25 2016 - 00Z Mon Feb 01 2016 Expect a continuation of relatively dry conditions during the period. At times there will be some variability in winds and thus focus for any light rainfall that does occur, as the islands will be near the southern periphery of systems carried along by the mid-latitude westerlies. Early in the period a front will progress southeastward into the islands Sun night-Mon, gradually weakening as it approaches the Big Island. Into early Mon this front will be accompanied by a narrow band of 1.25 inch or so precipitable water values which will likely end up being the highest seen over the islands during the full forecast period. Still what rain occurs along the front should be light. Passage of the front will bring a brief period of stronger winds from the north/northeast and then lighter winds as a weak trailing high drifts over the region. From late Tue into later in the week the pattern will stabilize some as the combination of eastern Pacific high pressure and wavy front approaching from the northwest support easterly/southeasterly winds near the Big Island and southwesterly winds to the northwest. Small scale of frontal waves would support lower than average predictability for position of the front at any particular valid time, favoring an intermediate solution for exact timing as it nears the northwestern islands. Expect this front to stall/weaken as another front approaches during the weekend. Rausch
