Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 705 AM EST Sat Feb 27 2016 Valid 00Z Sun Feb 28 2016 - 00Z Sun Mar 06 2016 Over the next seven days expect variable winds as progressive mid-latitude Pacific flow aloft pushes a series of fronts toward the islands. An initial front to the north of the state will stall as another front approaches, reaching the islands around Mon. Then a deep system wrapping up between Hawai'i and Alaska will bring a stronger front through in the Tue-Tue night time frame. Trailing high pressure will support a brief period of brisk northerly winds. Winds will weaken and become more easterly as the surface high weakens/elongates over or just north of the northern islands. Guidance indicates the approach of another front around next Sat. Models/ensemble means are agreeable for large scale features through Fri. Then recommend compromise timing as GFS/GEFS runs become somewhat faster than other solutions with the Sat front and trailing surface high. What rainfall does occur should be on the light side, especially from Wed onward when GFS/ECMWF runs show precipitable water values 1-2 standard deviations below climatology. Rausch
