Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 706 AM EST Mon Feb 29 2016 Valid 00Z Tue Mar 01 2016 - 00Z Tue Mar 08 2016 Continue to expect variable winds as progressive mid-latitude flow brings a series of surface fronts toward the state. One front, currently heading into the islands and accompanied by shower activity, will weaken/stall as a stronger front approaches and reaches the state on Tue. High pressure behind this second front will likely bring a brief period of brisk northerly winds into Tue night. Then winds will weaken and turn more northeasterly as high pressure weakens/elongates. Guidance has come closer together for the next front in the series, bringing it near the northern islands by Sat. This front should then return northward Sun as high pressure tracking north of the islands Sat continues eastward and yet another front begins coming into the picture northwest of the islands next Mon. In general expect what rainfall occurs during the forecast period to be on the light side, especially over central and northern areas where precipitable water values should be below normal most of the period. PWATs may reach 1.25" or so over the Big Island, allowing for slightly more terrain-enhanced rainfall. Rausch
