Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 730 AM EST Mon Dec 19 2016 Valid 00Z Tue Dec 20 2016 - 00Z Tue Dec 27 2016 The latest models and ensembles continue to offer below normal forecast spread and uncertainty for the Hawaiian weather pattern this week. Satellite imagery shows a significant closed low dug just to the southwest of the western islands. Blended precipitable water loops show the core of 2"+ values is pooled offshore with the low and along an old frontal boundary just south/southeast of the Big Island. However, a winter storm warning remains in effect over the Big Island for windy and snowy Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits above 8000 feet. The low will lose influence as it gradually weakens over the next couple of days. Expect moisture and lingering rainfall potential will still spread westward across the state during this period before a drying trend and return of seasonal trades as high pressure settles well northeast later week and then becomes reinforced to the north of the state next weekend.
