Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 707 AM EST Thu Jan 05 2017 Valid 00Z Fri Jan 06 2017 - 00Z Fri Jan 13 2017 With time mid-latitude Pacific flow should begin to show some progression relative to the blocky pattern in place through the weekend. From now into Saturday expect winds to have a northerly component as the state will be between a front to the east/southeast and surface ridge axis to the west/northwest. As a front approaches from the northwest late weekend into early next week, expect high pressure to become oriented more east-west over Hawai'i leading to lighter winds and more potential for land/sea breezes. For the first half of next week this front is still an issue of contention in the guidance, with the 00z/06z GFS and 00z GEFS mean bringing it farther southeast into the islands than most other solutions that keep it just to the northwest. At this time would recommend at least a compromise between the GFS and ECMWF clusters. Toward Wednesday-Thursday winds may turn more from the southeast/south as a system tracks to the northwest and north of the state. By late Thursday the 00z/06z GFS are on the fast side of what is a fairly large model/ensemble envelope for that system. Overall rainfall should be on the lighter side of the spectrum during the period. Expect driest precipitable water values Friday. Rausch
