Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 707 AM EST Sat Jan 07 2017 Valid 00Z Sun Jan 08 2017 - 00Z Sun Jan 15 2017 With the weekend departure of the upper trough initially to the northwest of the state, the pattern will settle into a regime dominated by an eastern Pacific ridge at the surface and aloft. The western periphery of the ridge axis will likely extend westward across the state, deflecting mid-latitude Pacific waves and their trailing fronts. As the pattern transitions over the next couple days northerly winds will shift to easterly and then vary by location, tending to be from the southeast near the Big Island and more from the south or southwest over the northwestern islands. The first front to be deflected should make its closest approach to the islands around 12z Tuesday before returning northward. Then another front should stall northwest of the area Thu-Sat. Expect rainfall to be on the light side overall with precipitable water values near to below normal through midweek. Guidance generally agrees upon some increase in moisture over the northwestern islands in flow ahead of the Thu-Sat front. As a result there could be at least a modest increase in shower activity over those locations later in the forecast period. Rausch
