Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 707 AM EST Sun Jan 08 2017 Valid 00Z Mon Jan 09 2017 - 00Z Mon Jan 16 2017 Today's guidance maintains good continuity and agreement for the expected pattern through next weekend. The north-south surface ridge along 160W longitude is about to split at mid-latitudes with the southern part forming a high that settles east-northeast of the state for the rest of the forecast period. A surface ridge will extend from this high across the islands, on average supporting winds from the east or southeast near the Big Island and from the south or southwest over the northwestern islands. There may be periods of light/variable winds at some locations. Fronts will remain to the northwest of the state. The first is still scheduled to reach its closest proximity around 12z Tuesday before retreating northward. The next front should make its closest approach late in the week and drift a little northward during the weekend. GFS/ECMWF runs generally agree that flow ahead of this front may draw a pocket of moisture across the northwestern islands in the Thursday-Friday time frame. Otherwise continue to expect relatively light rainfall with precipitable water values at near to below normal levels. Rausch
