Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 802 AM EDT Sun Mar 12 2017 Valid 00Z Mon Mar 13 2017 - 00Z Mon Mar 20 2017 The models are in good agreement and show a low level ridge in place early this week. Low level southeast flow focuses scattered showers mostly on windward terrain facing the flow in the big island and Maui. By mid week, shortwaves in the westerlies north of the islands cause a break in the ridge with a weak trough in the islands mid week. On Thu-Thu night, a trailing cold front crosses the islands. The front brings an uptick in showers but still the model output shows a focus on terrain in Maui and the big island. After the front passes, the low level flow is forecast to gradually veer, starting from north to northeast and eventually east near the end of next weekend or early next week. Windward showers are expected with the wind speeds greater than early in the week. The higher speeds result in greater lift and the model amounts are a little higher next weekend in the terrain than they forecast early in the week. Outside of the terrain, with the low level ridge becoming re-established, the lack of large scale convergence and ascent keeps activity isolated. Petersen
