Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 809 AM EDT Thu Apr 20 2017 Valid 00Z Fri Apr 21 2017 - 00Z Fri Apr 28 2017 Models and ensembles continue to show similar ideas for the upcoming week's forecast. From today and into Friday a cold front will be settling over the northern/central islands with an associated band of moisture allowing for potential of some locally moderate to heavy showers. The front will weaken after Friday but lingering moisture will maintain chances for pockets of enhanced rainfall into the weekend. Meanwhile trailing high pressure tracking north of the state will reestablish northeasterly then easterly trade flow and support a windward focus for rainfall. Expect a drier trend starting Sunday and persisting through Tuesday as moisture lifts away to the northwest. With varying details, operational model runs continue to show a pocket of higher moisture reaching the islands from the northeast in the Wednesday-Thursday time frame. This moisture is along the dissipating front from earlier in the period. Thus there may be at least a modest increase in rainfall toward midweek. Trades will likely fluctuate somewhat from the weekend through next week as high pressure settles over the eastern Pacific. The surface gradient relaxes a bit Sunday into Monday, tightens Monday into early Wednesday, and relaxes again through Thursday as a front approaches to the distant northwest. Rausch
