Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 751 AM EDT Sat May 04 2019 Valid 00Z Sun May 05 2019 - 00Z Sun May 12 2019 The anomalously deep closed upper low near 30N/160W this morning is forecast to move southeast to north of the islands around 25N 157W Sunday morning and then 23N 152W Monday morning, then moving east further away from Hawaii. An associated cold front is forecast to pass through the state from northwest to southeast tonight though Sunday, with additional post frontal trough passing through Sunday into Monday before the system departs. Models show the potential for some deeper tropical moisture to be pulled northward (perhaps a 6-12 hr duration) into the system (PWs 1.50-1.75 inches) today through tonight. The current models show 1-3 inches of rain in the coastal waters with a quarter to half inch with locally heavier amounts across the islands through tonight. On Sunday, the greater potential for showers with similar amounts to today is over the big island, with less rain in the northwest islands. In addition to the rainfall potential, 20-30 kt and gusty southerly/southwesterly to then northwesterly/northerly winds should develop behind the front starting today and continuing through Sunday across the state. Winds subside Monday as the pressure gradient relaxes. The departing low pressure is followed by high pressure building northwest of the islands next Fri 10 May and then norther of the islands next Sat 11 May. Winds will gradually veer from north to northeast and east northeast next weekend, with trades redeveloping. A well defined ridge west of islands builds across the islands next weekend, keeping weather tranquil. Petersen
