Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 245 AM EST Tue Dec 31 2019 Valid 00Z Wed Jan 01 2020 - 00Z Wed Jan 08 2020 Breezy trade winds over Hawaii should weaken and shift towards the southeast on Thursday. Guidance shows a shortwave sliding north of the state on Thursday, which will push a cold front through much of the island chain from Northwest to Southeast Thursday-Friday. Both the GFS and ECMWF suggest the deeper ITCZ moisture will be pulled northward east of the state resulting in merely modest showery activity with the frontal passage, though some enhanced precip across windward locations possible. The front should weaken over the state by Saturday, with gusty easterly winds returning by Sunday. Winds look to get quite gusty by early next week with strong high pressure building north of the state and any precipitation chances confined to the east and northeast facing coastlines, especially the Big Island and Maui.
