Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 327 AM EDT Tue Mar 10 2020 Valid 00Z Wed Mar 11 2020 - 00Z Wed Mar 18 2020 A cold front is expected to move across Hawaii starting Wed night as a deep upper-level low develops well north of the state. Trades should gradually weaken and veer to southeasterly ahead of the front on Wed. Models agree on this overall scenario but differ a bit on the exact timing of the front. Guidance now shows some potential for the front to initially stall across the western Hawaiian islands through Thu before a secondary frontal push arrives by Fri in response to additional shortwave energy rotating around the upper low. Even with this second frontal push, the front appears likely to stall once again across the eastern islands over the weekend, before perhaps drifting westward once again as it washes out. As the upper-level flow across the North Pacific becomes more blocked over the next several days, the pattern could stagnate a bit, keeping Hawaii locked into this pattern with a lingering boundary perhaps into early next week. Moisture return along the front is not quite as strong in the guidance as in recent days, but should be sufficient to support scattered to even numerous areas of convection over the weekend and into early next week, with the potential for localized areas of heavy rainfall.
