Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 358 AM EDT Wed Mar 18 2020 Valid 00Z Thu Mar 19 2020 - 00Z Thu Mar 26 2020 ...Heavy rainfall threat to subside by late in the week... Today's guidance continues to show the Kona low currently to the west of the state lifting northward and opening up over the next couple days. Expect the ongoing threat for periods of heavy rainfall and possible thunderstorms to continue through midweek and the shortwave axis to the south of the opening low does not reach the main islands until Thursday night. This could allow the heavy rainfall potential to extend into Thursday. There is reasonable agreement that the western islands should see the best potential for highest rainfall totals before the lighter trend commences. Generally southeasterly low level flow over the islands should trend somewhat lighter by Friday-Saturday with the northward departure of the Kona storm. From Sunday into next week the gradual movement of Pacific high pressure closer to the state will establish a more typical trade pattern with winds likely to be on the brisk side given the strong gradient south of the high. During this time frame expect windward/mountain-focused showers to be fairly light as precipitable water values drop close to or slightly below an inch. Rausch
