Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 236 AM EDT Fri Jul 24 2020 Valid 00Z Sat Jul 25 2020 - 00Z Sat Aug 01 2020 ...Tropical Cyclone Douglas forecast to reach Hawaii as a weakening hurricane or tropical storm this weekend... The most significant aspect of the forecast for Hawaii continues to be what is currently Hurricane Douglas, moving westward across the eastern/central Pacific. The latest track from the National Hurricane Center brings Douglas across the Hawaiian islands on Sunday as either a weakening hurricane or a strong tropical storm. Models and ensembles continue to show some differences on the exact track of Douglas, and even small variations in the track over the next few days, either farther north or south, could have significant effect on expected impacts for specific locations/islands. Regardless, there is an increasing chance that strong and gusty winds (tropical storm or hurricane force), dangerous surf, and heavy rainfall could impact portions of Hawaii beginning as early as Saturday night or Sunday morning. Several inches of rainfall are possible, with heavy rains likely across any islands that are close to the eventual track of the system. Refer to the latest guidance from the National Hurricane Center for the most up to date forecast information regarding Douglas. Douglas should continue to gradually weaken as it moves away from Hawaii by the early to middle part of next week. In the wake of the system, expect a drier air mass across the state and the resumption of a more typical trade wind pattern through next week. Santorelli
