Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 323 AM EDT Sun Jul 26 2020 Valid 00Z Mon Jul 27 2020 - 00Z Mon Aug 03 2020 ...Hurricane Douglas forecast to pass over or dangerously close to Hawaii Sunday and Monday... The most significant aspect of the forecast for Hawaii continues to be Hurricane Douglas, currently located to the east of the Big Island. The latest suite of deterministic and ensemble model guidance continues to take Douglas on a west-northwest track, with good consensus that Douglas will pass over or at least dangerously close to the island chain. Minor track fluctuations in the guidance continue and even small deviations on the exact track, either farther north or south, could have significant effects on expected impacts for specific locations/islands. Regardless though, it seems likely Douglas will bring strong and gusty (tropical storm and hurricane force) winds, dangerous surf, and heavy rainfall to portions of Hawaii beginning as early as Saturday night. As much as 5 to 10 inches of rainfall is possible from Maui to Kauai, which would result in life-threatening flooding and flash flooding. Refer to the latest guidance from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center for the most up to date information and current watches/warnings related to Douglas. Douglas should gradually weaken as it moves away from Hawaii by the early to middle part of next week. In the wake of the system, expect a drier air mass and the resumption of a more typical trade wind pattern through next weekend as high pressure builds north of the state. Santorelli
