Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 339 AM EDT Thu Aug 06 2020 Valid 00Z Fri Aug 07 2020 - 00Z Fri Aug 14 2020 Latest model and ensemble guidance still shows good continuity/agreement for the overall pattern. Expect moderate to brisk trades during the period with strongest winds during the weekend when high pressure to the northeast of the state is strongest. The pressure gradient will gradually relax from Monday onward as the westward-drifting surface high weakens somewhat. An area of enhanced moisture (precipitable water values generally above 1.50 inches) accompanied by an upper level weakness crossing the area during the latter half of this week will provide some increase of windward/mountain rainfall along with showers occasionally straying to leeward locations. Consensus shows a drier trend for the weekend. During next week guidance shows an area of lower heights aloft passing through, likely starting to depart around next Thursday. This could lead to a modest rebound in showers but precipitable water values should remain lower than what they are expected to be late this week. Most guidance suggests the relatively higher moisture during Monday-Thursday will be near the Big Island, with some differences in specifics due in part to the influence of low-predictability impulses aloft.
