Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 355 AM EST Mon Jan 18 2021 Valid 00Z Tue Jan 19 2021 - 00Z Tue Jan 26 2021 An unsettled weather pattern will be in place across the Hawaii domain to begin the week, with a potent upper level trough just north of the state, and the southern portion evolves into an upper low just south of the state based on the EC and GEFS means by Tuesday evening. This is resulting in a noteworthy inverted surface trough and stationary front over the region, which should dissipate into a weakening trough by Wednesday night as it tracks slowly westward. Both the GFS and ECMWF indicate multiple rounds of heavy rainfall across the Islands through early Wednesday, with the potential for some flooding with the heavier downpours. By the end of the week, the surface high builds back in to the northeast of the state. This will tend to strengthen the trades with a mainly easterly component to the flow. For next weekend, the ensemble means are suggesting another inverted surface trough will develop near 170 degrees west in response to a weak upper low, with most of the rain from this event expected to be west of the Islands.
