Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 404 AM EDT Mon Nov 01 2021 Valid 00Z Tue Nov 02 2021 - 00Z Tue Nov 09 2021 Light and variable winds are expected to continue for the next couple days in Hawaii due to a pattern disrupting the typical trade winds--a strong surface low pressure system traversing eastward well to the north of the state (around 40N latitude). Given the weak overall winds, daytime sea breezes will dominate and cause showers over interior areas where they set up, with nighttime land breezes tending to clear out the clouds and rain. By midweek onward, surface high pressure builds in north of the state, causing a return to more typical easterly trade winds and thus rain showers for windward and mountain areas. Meanwhile, a cold front extending from the aforementioned surface low is forecast to track slowly southward into the northern islands (Kauai/Oahu) Tuesday and Wednesday, which is likely to enhance moisture there through around Thursday and could increase shower coverage. After that, easterly trades should stay moderate to locally strong through the weekend, while there is a possibility for increased moisture to reach the Big Island around Friday-Saturday, though model guidance currently tends to keep it south of the state.
