Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 123 AM EST Sat Dec 25 2021 Valid 00Z Sun Dec 26 2021 - 00Z Sun Jan 02 2022 An anomalously strong high pressure system will remain anchored in the North Pacific between Hawaii and Alaska through at least the middle of next week. An upper low breaking away from the omega block and drifting west towards the island chain should interact with a stationary front to the north this weekend bringing an slight chance for showers across Hawaii, although the guidance continues to suggest the bulk of the heavy rainfall should stay west of the state. After this weekend, the models weaken this low in favor of another low dropping southward well to the west of Hawaii. This should bring gusty easterly flow to the islands and an increase in clouds and showers. The upper high looks to finally weaken and drift east later next week as a trough pushes east and amplifies to the west of Hawaii. This should cause winds to shift in a more south/southeasterly direction advecting a plume of ITCZ moisture northward towards the Hawaiian islands later next week. This may bring the potential for more widespread and moderate to locally heavy showers. There remains plenty of uncertainty in the models regarding timing and axis location of the best moisture, and how much (if any) impacts come to Hawaii. Santorelli
