Hawaii Extended Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 347 AM EDT Thu Apr 07 2022 Valid 00Z Fri Apr 08 2022 - 00Z Fri Apr 15 2022 High pressure currently progressing north of the islands will initially support brisk to strong trades through Friday. This high will settle over the eastern Pacific for the rest of the forecast period, which combined with a front to the distant northwest, should lead to an extended period more moderate trades from an east-southeast direction. GFS/GEFS mean runs continue to be deeper than other solutions with a weak upper trough that passes over the main islands during the weekend (possibly keeping forecast surface pressures/gradients a bit low) but recent trends have brought guidance closer together with respect to how much moisture may return from the south, with the latest consensus suggesting that precipitable water values could reach up to about 1.50 inches for a time during the weekend and/or early next week. Thus showers may produce a little more rainfall in that time frame relative to late this week. Expect upper ridging to develop over the state for at least a portion of next week with a moderate decrease in moisture. As the GFS has tended to do in the current regime, latest runs stray toward a greater eastward extent and/or position of the larger scale upper trough west of the state--especially late in the period. Thus the greater probability is for less moisture/rainfall to reach the western islands than what is forecast by the GFS after midweek. Rausch
