Quick Breakdown of Survey Results From WPC's Experimental National Forecast Chart

Question 3 (select comments from survey)

What features did you like or find useful? (select comments from survey)
  • "I like the ability to zoom and toggle off/on different layers."
  • "The ability to navigate around on the map."
  • "Clear and visually aesthetic"
  • "Easy to understand and manipulate"
  • "Thanks very much for including static images"
  • "All of it! How about extending it to other parts of the world?? Loving it!"
  • "Colored shading of precipitation areas. Simple background that pops out the weather forecast rather than the map background."
  • "Shading the areas of weather interest as opposed to a colored outline gives better understanding of the extent of the weather phenomena. General larger size of the entire map is also better."
  • "The date hover over at the top is nice. The maps look a lot nicer than the old maps. I like these and would be more likely to share them online."
  • "Perfect contrast and colors. Uncluttered. Clear, crisp graphics. A great amount of thought went into the new chart."
  • "The legend expands or collapses to show only those items displayed on the map. An "issued time" is shown. The areas of weather shown are very much easier to see than the current map system in use."

  • Question 4 (select comments from survey)

What features did you not like? (select comments from survey)
  • "Patterns and colors hurt eyes, hard to see geographic features underneath"
  • "Map is small. Full screen view would be nice"
  • "Color gradation is not great enough for poeple who have full or partial color blindness"
  • "I think the colors on the map should be consistent with the current colors so as to prevent possible confusion in the event the map is implemented"
  • "The mouse-overs for days 1,2,3 could be more apparent"
  • "Green dot thunderstorms"
  • "The heavy snow doesn't really show well"

  • Select Suggestions for Improvements:

  • "It would be nice to have an interactive satellite as well as radar. Topography would be an added bonus"
  • "I think a more comprehensive legend would be useful for the less weather inclined. At least a link that would describe all the lines, points, and other things that might show up on this map"
  • "Presentation of time labels above the map was not intuitive."
  • "Time labels on the bottom of the map should use computers local DST, not default to eastern"
  • "Need to have links to the feature service so we can pull it into our data sharing and collaboration platform. This should include the legend."
  • "Need more temporal resolution. At least every 12 hours, every six hours would be better."
  • "To not junk up the map with roads. Make that a layer where you can turn on or off. Just makes it harder to view if you zoom in."
  • "A box/boundary outlining the edges of the map domain would help illustrate where weather features end/are no longer drawn (out over the oceans, Canada, and Mexico)."
  • "Add the Spanish version"
