WPC QPF GRIB Files

  • The WPC is evaluating whether to continue generating GRIB files of its QPF forecasts. Please use the link at the bottom of this page to let us know if you use any of these GRIB files.

  • The WPC is currently making gridded 6-hourly QPF files, in GRIB format at 32km resolution, in addition to the standard Day 3, Days 4-5 and 5-Day total QPF products. The GRIB files are available for download via the NCEP anonymous FTP server (ftp.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov), under:

    /grib/ccYYMMDD

    where: cc = century; YY = year; MM = month; DD = day.

  • The files use the following naming convention:

    p06m_ccYYMMDDhhfFFF.grb

    where: cc = century; YY = year; MM = month; DD = day;
    hh = hour valid from (00, 06, 12, 18); FFF = forecast hour.

    For example, p06m_2000032112f060.grb represents the 6-hourly QPF from 60-66 hours from the 03/21/2000 1200 UTC cycle.

  • 24-hour Day 3 (p24m_ccYYMMDDhhf072.grb),
    48-hour Days 4-5 (p48m_ccYYMMDDhhf120.grb),
    and 5-day total (p120m_ccYYMMDDhhf120.grb)
    are also available for download.

  • These files are usually available around 1100/2300 UTC, with the Days 4-5 and 5-Day available around 2300 UTC.

  • Please read the NWS disclaimer about the availability of this data. This is being made available on an experimental basis. Please use the link at the bottom of this page to let us know if you find this data useful.
