The NET is the primary source of convection. Figures 2-6a-d show NET positions and the "zone of significant convection." "Significant" convection is the result of an average of at least two organized convective systems at least 200 km in size occurring during the month. These systems are cloud clusters (individual cells embedded in a common cirrostratus canopy) responsible for most of the rainfall received. Satellite cloud composites were in good agreement with zones of significant convection. The number of occurrences increases toward the center of each area. Monthly and yearly variability is greatest on the edges.
