AT 300 AM EST...AN ARCTIC FRONT CONTINUED TO EDGE SLOWLY
SOUTHEASTWARD ACROSS THE CENTRAL GULF STATES...THE CENTRAL AND
SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS...AND THE MID-ATLANTIC STATES. A COUPLE OF
SURFACE LOWS WITH CENTRAL PRESSURE OF 1008 MB OR 29.77 INCHES WERE
MOVING EASTWARD ACROSS THE CENTRAL/SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS ALONG THE
FRONTAL BOUNDARY. NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RADARS AND SURFACE
OBSERVATIONS INDICATED THAT RAIN WAS FALLING IMMEDIATELY BEHIND
THE ARCTIC FRONT. AS COLDER AIR PUSHES FURTHER TO THE SOUTH AND
EAST...RAIN WAS BEGINNING TO CHANGE OVER TO SLEET AND FREEZING
RAIN...AND TO ALL SNOW FARTHER TO THE NORTH. FARTHER WEST INTO
THE ARCTIC AIR...AN AREA OF SNOW IN THE SHAPE OF A COMMA HEAD WAS
MOVING EASTWARD FROM THE CENTRAL PLAINS TOWARD THE CENTRAL
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY.

MUCH OF THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE OVER TO
WINTRY PRECIPITATION BEFORE TAPERING OFF AND ENDING THIS EVENING.
SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OF 5 TO 10 INCHES...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER
AMOUNTS...ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS AND INTO
VIRGINIA. SOME FREEZING RAIN ICE ACCUMULATIONS ARE ALSO EXPECTED
IN THESE REGIONS BEFORE PRECIPITATION CHANGES TO SNOW. HEAVY SNOW
AND ICE ACCUMULATIONS WILL LIKELY CAUSE TRAVEL DISRUPTIONS IN
THESE REGIONS.
