Storm Summary Number 7 for Southwest to Lower Mississippi Valley
Heavy Rain
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
1000 PM CDT Sat Sep 22 2018

...Heavy rain and flash flooding continues from the Southern
Plains to Ohio Valley...

Flash flood warnings are in effect across parts of northern Texas
as well as parts of southwestern Virginia and southern West
Virginia.

Flood warnings, flash flood watches, and flood advisories are in
effect for the Arklatex region as well as much of the Ohio Valley
and central Appalachians.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 900 PM CDT...Pacific moisture associated with former Tropical
Depression 19-E as well as moisture from the Gulf of Mexico
continues to allow for an impressive axis of moisture to stretch
from the Southern Plains to the Central Appalachians. At the
surface, the center of a low pressure system with a central
pressure of 1010 mb or 29.83 inches was located about 75 miles
southeast of Dallas, Texas. From this low, a slow-moving cold
front stretched southward through eastern Texas, while another
slow-moving cold front extended eastward across the Tennessee
Valley and into the Mid-Atlantic. National Weather Service radars
and surface observations indicated that light to moderate rain was
widespread to the north of the front from southeastern Oklahoma
eastward into the Mid-Atlantic. Meanwhile, scattered showers and
thunderstorms were found across eastern Texas and then move
eastward into Louisiana ahead of the cold front.

The low pressure system is forecast to move slowly eastward across
eastern Texas over the next couple of days. An additional 3 to 5
inches of rain is expected to fall between the Arklatex and the
upper Ohio valley, leading to local storm total amounts of 15 to
20 inches. This would be similar to other tropical cyclone
remnant-related events from Norma 1981 with 18.71 inches at
Kingston 4 SSE OK...Tico 1983 with 16.95 inches at Chickasha OK...
and similar heavy rain events from September 28-October 2, 1927
with 14.59 inches at Dutton AR... October 19-24, 1908 with 16.23
inches at Meaker OK...and October 11, 1973 with 15.68 inches at
Enid OK. As the low pressure system is forecast to weaken further
early next week, the focus of heavy rainfall will gradually shift
northeastward along and north of the stationary front across the
Tennessee and Ohio Valleys early next week.

The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 400 AM CDT. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
