Storm Summary Number 8 for Southern Plains to Southeastern U.S.
Winter Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
1000 AM EST Sun Dec 09 2018

...A major winter storm was affecting parts of the Southern
Appalacians and Mid-Atlantic...

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories stretch
between the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys into the southern
Appalachians and southern Mid-Atlantic.

Flood Watches are in effect for portions of southeastern Georgia.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 900 AM EST...A low pressure system with a central pressure of
1010 mb, 29.83 inches of mercury, was located in southern Georgia,
approximately 100 miles northwest of Jacksonville, Florida. This
system was moving eastward along a warm front that stretched
across southern Georgia and offshore of the Southeast coast.
Aloft, an eastward moving upper level disturbance was located over
Tennessee and leading to wintry precipitation east of the
Mississippi River to the Piedmont. Moisture streaming ahead of the
upper level disturbance was overrunning the frontal boundary
allowing for widespread precipitation across the southeast United
States. National Weather Service radar and surface observations
indicated that cold light rain and snow were falling over western
Tennessee, into the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. Widespread snow
was falling across northern North Carolina and southwest Virginia
with moderate rates in the mountains. Sleet and freezing rain was
falling across northern South Carolina and central North Carolina.
Further south, heavy rain and thunderstorms were found across
Florida ahead of a cold front.
